Novel Writing: Before You Begin The Novel

Before You Begin The Novel: 10 Exercises To Get You Started

Facing the blank page can be intimidating. In this workshop, we will create a personalized “encyclopedia” of material to use as a reference when writing the novel – What is the universal theme of the story? What does the protagonist really want? Etc. We will explore the protagonist’s history, fears, and desires, as well as his or her relationship to the antagonist. We will identify the larger theme that draws us to this particular story, a basic outline of the beginning, middle, and end, and the emotional arc of the protagonist. By the end of the workshop, we will have in our arsenal many important elements to get us started so that the blank page remains blank no more.
